Mgahinga gorilla national park is located in the three slopes if virunga volcanoes including muhavura, gahinga and congo. This park, though small at just 33 square km it it adjoins the Volcanoe national park and Virunga national park.
Gorilla conservation on the virunga dates back in 1925 when the Belgians gazetted the portion of the range in present day congo and rwanda national park,
Then later the British administrator also declared the Uganda’s section as a game park in 1930. This was upgraded to national park in 1991.
Mgahinga gorilla national park is a home for over 76 mammals and over 115 bird species, related to Bwindi impenetrable forest with over 120 types of mammals.
You can access the park by the road driving from kampala, the capital city of uganda, and it approximately 524km by road. It takes approximately 8-9 hours drive from kampala to mgahinga.
There are also domestic flights arranged by Aerolink and Eagle air, from entebbe international airport to kisoro.
A part from gorilla tracking, there are other activities done within the region including Mountain hiking at mount muhabura, Batwa trails, boat rides at lake mutanda, community walks, birding, golden monkey tracking among others.
Mount muhabura has got an interesting history connecting ntebeko and a crater being connected to lake mutanda.
The people surrounding this area are bafumbira and the speak rufumbira, also known as kinyarwanda being very close to rwanda, note that Rwanda is the next place after kisoro where we find the mgahinga gorilla national park.
